Sinus Lift
When a tooth or several teeth have been missing for a while, a patient can experience bone loss that negatively affects jaw function and makes placing an implant successfully nearly impossible. In such circumstances, a sinus lift is often a good solution and the dentists at Berdy Dental Group have extensive experience with this procedure. Read below to learn how sinus lifts can replace missing bone tissue to help restore function or to prepare an implant site, then contact us at 904-389-1376 to arrange a consultation appointment with Dr. Christian Berdy or Dr. Cary Berdy.
When a tooth has been lost from the upper jaw, there may not be sufficient bone structure in the sinus region to place a dental implant. Tooth loss can lead to bone loss because the bone begins to be reabsorbed once the teeth have been lost or removed. If the teeth have been missing for a longer period of time, or if bone loss has occurred because of periodontal disease, this may further contribute to lack of bone for implant placement.
To supplement the bone structure and allow for the successful placement of a dental implant, our dentists may recommend a sinus lift, which adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the back teeth (molars and premolars).
The maxillary sinuses are located above the upper jawbone on either side of your nose. During a sinus lift, we gently lift the sinus membrane and push it up and away from the jaw. We then add bone-grafting material in the area where the sinus was to add to the bone structure.
We typically allow a healing period of four to nine months after this procedure to allow the grafted material to mesh with the natural bone. The dental implant can then be placed to replace the missing tooth.
